Contingency The contingency argument says that contingent things exist but could have failed to exist, and each depends on something else for its existence. The universe is made up of contingent things, so it too requires an explanation. An infinite chain of contingent causes cannot fully explain existence, so there must be a necessary being—one that exists by its own nature and explains why anything exists at all.
